Examination of Thin Layers of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton with Emphasis on Bioluminescence
نویسندگان
چکیده
•Thin layers of plankton are commonly found in coastal environments, with a vertical scale ranging from centimeters to a few meters, but extending horizontally over kilometers. The abundance of organisms in these layers is several orders of magnitude higher than background levels1 and are persistent, lasting hours to days. These layers are highly productive and can contain 50-75% of the total biomass of the water column2-4. Thin layers are ubiquitous features in coastal environments with a profound influence on trophic interactions.

Integrated measurements of acoustical and optical thin layers I: Vertical scales of association
This study combined measurements from multiple platforms with acoustic instruments on moorings and on a ship and optics on a profiler and an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to examine the relationships between fluorescent, bioluminescent, and acoustically scattering layers in Monterey Bay during nighttime hours in July and August of 2006 and May of 2008. We identified thin bioluminescent la...
متن کامل1 Plankton Patch Feasibility Experiments
Efforts this year focused on testing our model of the effects of episodic increases in current shear on the dynamics and impacts of thin layers of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Thin layers are plankton patches that range in thickness from a few tens of centimeters to a few meters, yet can be sufficiently intense to affect biological rate processes and the performance of current and planned Nav...
متن کاملEdge gradients provide evidence of ecological interactions in planktonic thin layers
Physical, optical, and acoustical data from Monterey Bay, California, USA, describing the distributions of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and small fish as well as gradients in the physical habitat were used to examine the interactions between vertically compressed plankton structures (thin layers), their consumers, and the local physical forces they experience. The relationship between upper and ...
متن کاملEffects of sumithion on growth and production of phytoplankton and zooplankton in aquaculture ponds
Sumithion is an organophosphorous pesticide widely used to control tiger bug in the fish larval rearing pond. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of sumithion on plankton population abundance in aquaculture pond. The experiment was carried out with three treatments, i.e., ponds with no sumithion (T1), with 1.0 ppm sumithion (T2) and 2.0 ppm sumithion (T3). The water quality p...
متن کاملPredator Effects on Dense Zooplankton Aggregations in the Coastal Ocean
The distribution of organisms in the ocean is highly heterogeneous, influencing both sampling and ecological structure. The complex spatial and temporal structure of predators and prey affect one another. Numerous studies in pelagic systems have investigated the effects of prey distribution on predator behavior and studies in benthic habitats have revealed the significant impacts predators can ...
